Shopify Fee Calculator
Estimate monthly Shopify costs: card processing, the extra transaction fee for third-party payment providers by plan, subscription and apps.
Running a Shopify store costs more than the plan price. Every order pays a card processing fee, and eligible third-party payments can attract an extra Shopify transaction fee — 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. This online-card model adds those to subscription and app costs; enter your contracted processing prices.
How to use this tool
- Choose your plan and whether you use Shopify Payments or a third-party provider.
- Enter your orders per month and the average amount a customer pays per order.
- Enter your card processing rate and fixed fee, and your monthly subscription and app costs.
- Read the total, the cost per order, and the table comparing Shopify's third-party fee across plans.
Formula
Processing = Orders × (Order total × Rate + Fixed fee)
Shopify transaction fee = Sales × Plan rate (third-party providers only)
Total = Processing + Transaction fee + Subscription + Apps
The plan rate is Shopify's charge for using an outside payment provider; that provider still charges its own processing fee, which goes in the card rate fields.
Example
A Basic store with 200 orders a month at $60 each sells $12,000. With Shopify Payments at 2.9% + $0.30, processing costs 200 × ($1.74 + $0.30) = $408. Adding the $39 plan and $20 of apps gives $467 a month, or $2.34 per order — 3.89% of sales. Switching to a third-party provider would add 2% of $12,000, another $240.
Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify charge a transaction fee?
Online card payments through Shopify Payments avoid the extra fee. Eligible third-party transactions incur the plan rate. PayPal is exempt when Shopify Payments is primary; gift-card and store-credit rules differ.
When is it worth upgrading to a higher plan?
Compare the extra subscription cost with the savings. Higher plans have lower card rates and lower third-party fees, so they pay off once your monthly sales are large enough for the percentage savings to exceed the price difference.
Are card fees refunded when I refund an order?
Generally no — processing fees on the original payment are usually kept, so returns add to your effective fee rate.
