Estimate a US Walmart Marketplace referral fee and the contribution left after your entered product and fulfillment costs. Rates depend on the category assigned to the item. The inverse calculation searches each fee band for the lowest positive, whole-cent item price covering costs or a target margin while your shipping charge stays fixed.
How to use this tool
- Pick the category your item is listed in.
- Enter the item price and separately charged shipping/handling in whole cents. Include gift wrap or similar customer charges with shipping.
- Add your product cost and fulfillment cost — your own postage or the WFS fee.
- Set a target margin to get a suggested price, and check the tables to see how the fee changes with price.
Formula
Total sales price = Item price + Shipping charged
Referral fee = Rate × Total sales price
Profit = Total sales price − Referral fee − Costs
Some categories apply a single rate to the whole total; others charge portions at different rates. The inverse search checks every band and requires Profit ≥ Target margin × Total sales price. It returns a cent quote under unrounded fee arithmetic, which can differ slightly from statement rounding. A later price increase can cross a fee jump and lose the target margin again.
Example
A $29.99 kitchen item with free shipping pays 15%, a referral fee of $4.50. With a $9 product cost and $6.50 fulfillment, the profit is $9.99, a 33.3% margin and a 111% return on product cost. The break-even price is $15.50 ÷ 0.85 = $18.24, and a 20% margin needs $15.50 ÷ 0.65 = $23.85.
Frequently asked questions
What percentage does Walmart take from sellers?
Use the category assigned in Seller Center. The tool stores the published base schedule, including whole-price switches and marginal tiers, but excludes promotions, negotiated adjustments and taxes on fees. Fulfillment, storage, advertising and returns need separate cost inputs.
Does Walmart charge fees on shipping?
Yes. The referral fee is calculated on the total sales price, which includes shipping and handling, gift wrap and other charges, not just the item price.
Is the WFS fee included?
No. Walmart Fulfillment Services fees depend on the item's weight, size and storage time, so enter the per-unit WFS fee from Seller Center as your fulfillment cost.
Why can a slightly higher price earn less?
Whole-price rates can jump. Apparel at $15 pays 5%, but just above $15 pays 10% on the entire sale. Outdoor power tools have the reverse pattern: the whole-price rate falls from 15% to 8% above $500.
