Favicon Converter — PNG and ICO

Convert a PNG, JPEG, WebP or browser-decodable ICO to a square PNG or single-image ICO, with size, padding and crop controls.

Convert a local image into a single square favicon file. Choose PNG or ICO and a size from 16 to 256 pixels, then decide how to handle a non-square source. PNG, JPEG, WebP and browser-decodable ICO inputs are supported within the stated size limits.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose one supported image file.
  2. Select PNG or a single-image ICO output and the desired size.
  3. Choose padding or center crop and a transparent, white or black background.
  4. Inspect the converted preview and download the result.

Formula

Output = resized square image encoded as PNG, or a 22-byte ICO directory followed by that PNG

A one-image ICO uses a 6-byte header and one 16-byte directory entry. Width or height 256 is stored as zero in the directory byte. Its payload is a real PNG image. The file is not created by simply changing a filename extension.

Example

A 160×100 image fitted inside a 32×32 output is scaled to 32×20 visible pixels, with 6 pixels of padding above and below. A center crop instead selects the central 100 × 100 region and fills the square.

Frequently asked questions

Can I extract every image from an existing ICO?

No. The browser chooses a representation to decode. This converter resizes that decoded image; it does not expose every directory entry or preserve all original sizes.

Which output should I use?

PNG works with an explicit icon link in modern browsers. ICO can contain icon-specific directory information; this page creates one size. Use the package generator when you need several sizes and installation snippets.

Will a larger output look sharper?

Only when the source already contains enough detail. Enlarging a small decoded icon adds pixels through resampling, not new design information. Review small text and thin lines at the actual output size.
