PNG to SVG Converter
Turn PNG, JPG or WebP images into real vector SVG paths in your browser. Choose colours, detail and smoothing, or trace in black and white.
A PNG is a grid of pixels; an SVG describes shapes, so it scales to any size without blurring and can be edited in Illustrator, Inkscape or Figma. This converter traces your image into real vector paths — one per colour — in your browser, with control over the number of colours, the amount of detail and curve smoothing. Nothing is uploaded.
How to use this tool
- Choose a PNG, JPG, WebP or AVIF image — logos, icons, flat illustrations and signatures work best.
- Pick Colour mode and a number of colours (8 is a good start), or Black & white with a threshold for line art.
- Choose the detail level and whether curves should be smoothed; tick “ignore white background” for a transparent result.
- Press Convert, check the preview, then download the .svg file or copy its code.
Formula
1. Downscale to at most 1000 px. 2. Reduce to N colours (median cut, refined by k-means). 3. Trace each colour layer with marching squares. 4. Simplify outlines with Ramer–Douglas–Peucker (tolerance 0.6 / 1 / 1.6 px for high / medium / low). 5. Optionally fit Catmull-Rom curves as cubic Béziers.
Layers are stacked from the largest colour area to the smallest, each layer extending under the ones above it, so neighbouring colours never show hairline gaps. Coordinates are scaled back to the original size.
Example
A scanned signature of 1200 × 500 px in Black & white mode at threshold 128 gives 2 paths (black ink, white paper), traced at 1000 × 417 px with a viewBox of 0 0 1200 500. Ticking “ignore white background” leaves 1 path — just the ink — on a transparent background.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my photo look like a poster?
Vector tracing turns similar pixels into flat shapes. Photos have millions of shades, so a few colours cannot reproduce them; raise the colour count and detail, or keep photos as JPG.
Is the result a true vector?
Yes. The SVG contains only path elements with fill colours, no embedded bitmap, so it can be scaled and edited freely.
What happens to transparency?
Pixels that are more than half transparent are left empty, so a logo on a transparent PNG stays transparent.
Are my images uploaded?
No. The tracing code runs in your browser.
