AVIF to JPG Converter

Convert AVIF images to JPG in your browser with adjustable quality, a background colour for transparency, optional max width and batch conversion.

AVIF images are tiny for their quality, but plenty of software still cannot open them: older photo viewers and editors, office suites, many upload forms and print services. This converter decodes AVIF with your browser's built-in decoder and saves a standard JPG, with a quality setting, a background colour for transparent images, an optional max width and batch conversion. Files are processed on your device and never uploaded.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose one or more .avif files.
  2. Set the JPG quality; 90 keeps photos looking like the original.
  3. Pick a background colour for transparent areas and, if you need it, a max width.
  4. Convert and download each JPG, or all of them as a ZIP.

Formula

JPG = JPEG encoding (quality q) of the decoded AVIF pixels drawn over the background colour

AVIF stores AV1-compressed still images inside a HEIF container. Decoding needs a browser that supports it: Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Edge 121+ or Safari 16.4+. If yours is older, the page asks you to update instead of producing a broken file. An animated AVIF (an image sequence) gives its first frame.

Example

A 1,200 × 1,598 px farm photo stored as a 341 KB AVIF became a 535 KB JPG at quality 90, and a 289 KB JPG at quality 75. The JPG is bigger because JPEG is a much older and less efficient format, not because anything was added.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the JPG bigger than the AVIF?

AVIF needs far fewer bytes than JPEG for the same picture, so the JPG version is larger. Lower the quality to 75–80 if file size matters more than the last bit of detail.

It says my browser cannot decode AVIF

Update your browser. On an older computer, current Chrome or Firefox decode AVIF on every operating system they still support, while Safari depends on your macOS or iOS version.

Is transparency kept?

JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick — white by default.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Decoding and encoding both happen in your browser.
