Unemployment Insurance Calculator: Budget From Your Award

Plan a benefit budget using your confirmed weekly unemployment award, payable weeks and remaining balance, with an optional tax reserve and spending gap.

Exclude unpaid waiting weeks and weeks disqualified by earnings or other rules
An award balance does not extend the benefit-year deadline
Budget set-aside only; not a calculation of actual withholding or tax owed
Use income already considered in the agency award; work earnings can change eligibility and the payment

Turn an unemployment insurance award into a short-term budget. Enter the weekly amount confirmed by your agency, the payable weeks you expect and the award balance remaining. The calculator estimates money available after a chosen tax reserve and compares it with essential spending.

How to use this tool

  1. Read the weekly benefit and remaining balance from your current award notice.
  2. Enter only weeks the agency considers payable within the benefit year.
  3. Choose a tax reserve percentage for planning.
  4. Enter weekly spending and other spendable income already reflected in the agency assessment.

Formula

Gross budget = min(weekly award × payable weeks, remaining balance)

Spendable budget = gross budget × (1 − tax reserve rate)

Spending gap = max(0, weekly spending × weeks − other income × weeks − spendable budget)

The calculation caps the total at the supplied balance. It does not schedule weekly checks, establish entitlement to a partial final week or extend a benefit year. Use consistent weekly amounts. The reserve is your assumption, not an agency withholding election or a tax-return calculation.

Example

An award of $400 weekly for 12 payable weeks, with an $8,000 balance, gives $4,800 gross. A 10% reserve sets aside $480, leaving $4,320. Essential spending of $600 weekly totals $7,200, leaving a $2,880 gap if no other income is available.

Frequently asked questions

Why does this not estimate eligibility from wages?

U.S. unemployment programs use state-specific base periods, wage tests, benefit limits and nonfinancial conditions. A single national formula would be misleading.

Can I enter earnings from part-time work?

Work earnings can reduce benefits or change payable weeks. First obtain the agency-adjusted award; the other-income field does not calculate those reductions.

Will all remaining benefits be paid?

Not necessarily. Certification, job-search rules, disqualifications and the benefit-year deadline still apply even when an award balance remains.
