SNAP Calculator: Regular Federal Income and Allotment Model
Illustrate regular SNAP income tests and a full-month allotment for 1–8 people in the contiguous states and DC, with explicit FY2026 and FY2027 tables.
Illustrate regular federal SNAP financial tests and a full-month allotment for one to eight people in the contiguous states or DC. Choose FY2026 or FY2027 because the rules change on October 1, 2026. This model excludes elderly or disabled households and does not determine actual state eligibility.
How to use this tool
- Choose the benefit period and eligible household size.
- Enter countable earned and unearned income before the listed deductions.
- Enter allowable dependent care and other agency-approved deductions without double counting income exclusions.
- Use approved shelter and utility amounts, then enter countable resources.
Formula
Adjusted income = max(0, gross income − 20% of earnings − standard deduction − approved deductions)
Shelter deduction = min(cap, max(0, shelter costs − adjusted income ÷ 2))
Net income = max(0, adjusted income − shelter deduction)
Allotment = maximum allotment − ceiling(30% of net income), subject to financial tests and minimum benefit
The ordinary model tests gross and net income plus a $3,000 resource limit. FY2027 shelter deduction is capped at $769; FY2026 uses $744. For qualifying one- or two-person households, ongoing monthly minimums are $25 and $24 respectively. Income is retained without intermediate whole-dollar rounding; state rounding and special rules can affect the actual amount.
Example
In FY2027, four people have $1,500 earnings, $550 other income, $362 dependent care and $700 allowable shelter. Adjusted income is $2,050 − $300 − $229 − $362 = $1,159. Shelter deduction is $700 − $579.50 = $120.50, leaving $1,038.50 net. With resources within the limit, $1,023 − ceiling($311.55) gives $711.
Frequently asked questions
Does zero mean I cannot get SNAP?
No. Many states use broad-based categorical eligibility with different financial tests. Elderly or disabled members also change the rules. Ask the state agency about your household.
Can I enter my utility bill directly?
Only if that is the agency’s allowed amount. States often use approved utility allowances. Do not assume a national utility deduction.
Which eligibility checks are missing?
Work, citizenship, student status and other nonfinancial rules are outside this calculation. Initial-month proration, sanctions, special deductions and emergency benefit changes are also excluded.
