Final Grade Calculator — What Do I Need on My Final?

Find the score you need on your final exam to reach a target course grade, from your current grade and the weight of the final.

Check your syllabus, e.g. 20%, 25% or 30%

Find out what you need on your final exam to finish a class with the grade you want. Enter your current grade, how much the final counts toward the course grade, and your goal. The calculator also shows the best and worst course grade still possible and the final score needed for an A, B, C or D.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your current grade in the class as a percentage.
  2. Enter the final exam’s weight from the syllabus.
  3. Enter the course grade you are aiming for.
  4. Read the score you need on the final and the letter-grade table.

Formula

Final score needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w

w is the final exam weight as a decimal (25% = 0.25). Everything except the final counts for 1 − w of the course grade, so your current grade contributes current × (1 − w) points. The final has to make up the rest.

Example

With a current grade of 82%, a final worth 25% and a goal of 85%, the graded work already gives 82 × 0.75 = 61.5 points. You need 85 − 61.5 = 23.5 more points from the final, and 23.5 ÷ 0.25 = 94% on the final. A perfect 100% would give 86.5%, and a zero would leave you at 61.5%.

Frequently asked questions

What if the score needed is over 100%?

Then the target cannot be reached through the final alone. The table shows which lower grade is still within reach, or you can ask about extra credit.

What if other assignments are still ungraded?

This calculator assumes the final is the only work left. If a project is also pending, first compute its contribution as project score times project weight. Subtract that and the completed-work contribution from your target, then divide by the final exam weight.

My class uses points, not percentages. What do I enter?

Divide the points you have earned by the points possible so far to get your current percentage. The final’s weight is its points divided by the total points in the course.
