Weighted GPA Calculator
Calculate your weighted and unweighted high school GPA with honors and AP/IB bonus points and course credits on the 4.0 scale.
Many high schools give extra grade points for harder classes, so an A in AP Calculus counts for more than an A in a regular class. This calculator works out both your weighted GPA, with honors and AP, IB or dual-enrollment bonuses, and your unweighted GPA on the 4.0 scale, using each class’s credits so half-year courses count half as much.
How to use this tool
- For each class, pick the letter grade and the level: regular, honors or AP/IB/dual enrollment.
- Enter the credits: usually 1 for a full-year class and 0.5 for a semester class.
- Change the bonus points if your school uses different values.
- Read your weighted and unweighted GPA, and the boost the harder classes give you.
Formula
Weighted GPA = Σ((grade points + level bonus) × credits) ÷ Σ credits
The most common scheme adds 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP, IB and dual-enrollment classes, so an A is worth 4.5 in honors and 5.0 in AP. Many schools give no bonus for a failing grade, and this calculator follows that rule. The unweighted GPA uses the same grades with no bonus at all.
Example
An A in AP Biology, a B+ in Honors English, an A− in regular History and a B in AP Calculus, each worth 1 credit, earn 5.0 + 3.8 + 3.7 + 4.0 = 16.5 weighted points: a 4.13 weighted GPA. Without the bonuses the points are 4.0 + 3.3 + 3.7 + 3.0 = 14.0, a 3.50 unweighted GPA.
Frequently asked questions
Can a weighted GPA be higher than 4.0?
Yes. With a 1.0 AP bonus the maximum is usually 5.0, straight A’s in AP classes. An unweighted GPA cannot go above 4.0 on this scale, unless your school counts an A+ as 4.3.
Do colleges look at weighted or unweighted GPA?
Both often appear on transcripts, and many colleges recalculate GPA with their own rules, for example counting only core academic classes or applying their own weighting. Report what your transcript shows.
My school weights classes differently.
Change the honors and AP bonus boxes. Some schools give 1.0 for honors as well, and some use 0.5 for AP. This tool gives a bonus to every passing grade; if your school requires C or better for a bonus, enter any lower grade as Regular to apply no bonus.
Should I include electives and PE?
Include the classes your school counts toward GPA. Many schools include every graded class; some leave out pass/fail courses or non-academic electives.
