10-Point Grading Scale Calculator
Turn points into a percentage and letter using an explicit 10-point grading convention, with optional plus/minus, rounding and reference GPA points.
This calculator uses an explicit 10-point grading convention: A starts at 90%, B at 80%, C at 70%, D at 60% and F is below 60%. Enter the points earned and the points possible to get the percentage, the letter grade with or without plus and minus, the matching 4.0 GPA points and how many points the next letter needs. The table lists the minimum score for every grade on a test of your size, which is handy for teachers setting cut-offs.
How to use this tool
- Enter the points earned and the total points possible.
- Tick or untick plus and minus grades to match your school.
- Choose whether your teacher rounds percentages to the nearest whole number.
- Read the letter grade, GPA points and the points needed for the next letter.
Formula
Percentage = points earned ÷ points possible × 100
Without plus/minus, cutoffs are 90/80/70/60. With plus/minus, use A93+, A−90+, B+87+, B83+, B−80+, C+77+, C73+, C−70+, D+67+, D63+, D−60+. Each interval ends just below the next cutoff. Rounded mode lowers each original-score cutoff by 0.5 percentage points. GPA points: A 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D- 0.7, F 0.
Example
A student scores 87 out of 100, which is 87%. On the plain 10-point scale that is a B; with plus and minus grades it is a B+, worth 3.3 GPA points. Three more points (90%) would make it an A-. On a 50-point quiz the table shows the cut-offs: an A- needs at least 45 points and an A needs 46.5.
Frequently asked questions
How is a 10-point scale different from a 7-point scale?
The name alone is insufficient: schools may use different thresholds and rounding rules. Compare the actual published cutoffs with the table here before using this result for a class.
Is 89.5% an A?
Rounding makes it 90%: A without plus/minus, or A− with plus/minus. Without rounding it is B or B+ respectively. Your class policy determines which option applies.
Does an A+ count more than an A?
This tool has no separate A+ band and caps reference points at 4.0. Schools may assign A+ differently, so use their stated policy if it matters.
Can I enter extra credit?
Yes. If the points earned exceed the total, the percentage goes above 100% and the grade stays at the top letter.
