Cumulative GPA Calculator
Combine semester GPAs and credits into your cumulative GPA, and find the GPA you need next term to reach a target overall GPA.
Your cumulative GPA is the average of every graded credit you have taken, not the average of your semester GPAs. This calculator combines terms correctly by weighting each one by its credits. It also tells you what GPA you would need next term to reach a target, and the highest overall GPA you could reach in one more term.
How to use this tool
- List each term on its own line with its GPA and the credits that counted toward it.
- Optionally enter a target cumulative GPA and next term’s credits.
- Pick the top of your grading scale.
- Read your cumulative GPA, the term-by-term table and the GPA you need next term.
Formula
Cumulative GPA = Σ (term GPA × term credits) ÷ Σ credits
Term GPA × credits gives the quality points for that term. The GPA needed next term is (target × (current credits + next credits) − current quality points) ÷ next credits.
Example
With 3.40 over 15 credits, 3.10 over 16 and 3.65 over 15, the quality points are 51 + 49.6 + 54.75 = 155.35 over 46 credits, so the cumulative GPA is 3.377. To reach 3.5 after a 15-credit term you need (3.5 × 61 − 155.35) ÷ 15 = 3.877 next term. A target of 3.9 would need 5.50, which is not possible; the most you could reach is 3.530.
Frequently asked questions
Can I just average my semester GPAs?
Only if every semester had the same number of credits. Otherwise a light semester counts too much, so weight each term by its credits as this calculator does.
Why does my GPA move so little now?
The more credits you have, the less one term changes the average. After 90 credits, a 15-credit term makes up about 14% of the total.
Do transfer credits count?
Many colleges count transfer credits toward graduation but not toward the GPA. Leave them out unless your transcript includes them in the GPA.
