4.0 Scale GPA Calculator
Convert letter grades or percentages to a credit-weighted GPA on the 4.0 scale, or rescale a GPA from a 5.0, 10-point or other scale.
Convert course grades using the explicit 4.0 grade-point convention listed below. List your courses with letter grades or percentages, and credits if they differ, to get a credit-weighted average on this convention — or quickly rescale a GPA from a 5.0, 10-point or other scale.
How to use this tool
- Choose a method: your course grades (most accurate) or a quick scale conversion.
- For course grades, enter one course per line: an optional name, a letter or percentage, then credits — for example "Biology 91 4".
- For a quick conversion, enter your GPA and the maximum of its scale.
- Read your 4.0-scale GPA and check the course-by-course table.
Formula
GPA = Σ (grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits; quick method: GPA × 4 ÷ scale maximum
Letters: A+ and A = 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D- 0.7, F 0. Percentage lower cutoffs are 93,90,87,83,80,77,73,70,67,65 for 4.0,3.7,3.3,3.0,2.7,2.3,2.0,1.7,1.3,1.0 respectively; each interval ends just below the next cutoff. Below 65 is 0. These are this tool’s explicit conventions.
Example
The College Board's own example uses five classes graded A, A, A, B and C: 4 + 4 + 4 + 3 + 2 = 17 points, and 17 ÷ 5 = 3.4. With credits, an A in a 3-credit course and a C in a 1-credit course give (4 × 3 + 2 × 1) ÷ 4 = 3.5.
Frequently asked questions
Is the quick scale conversion accurate?
Only roughly. Dividing by the scale maximum assumes grades are spread evenly, which is rarely true, and a 5.0 weighted scale mixes in honors bonuses. Colleges recalculate from individual grades, so the course-grades method is the better estimate.
How do I convert a percentage average to the 4.0 scale?
Enter it as a single line, for example "88". On the table used here 88% is a B+, or 3.3. If your school rounds 89.5 up to 90, round before entering.
Do honors and AP classes count extra?
Not on an unweighted 4.0 scale — an A is 4.0 at any level. Use a weighted GPA calculator if you need the 5.0-style figure.
What about pass/fail courses?
Leave them out. Follow your institution’s treatment of pass/fail outcomes; this parser accepts letter and percentage grades only.
