Work out your UK take-home pay for the 2026/27 tax year (6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027). The calculator applies the £12,570 Personal Allowance and its taper above £100,000, the income tax bands for England, Wales and Northern Ireland or for Scotland, employee National Insurance at 8% and 2%, workplace pension contributions and student loan repayments.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your annual salary before tax.
  2. Choose where you live — Scotland has its own income tax bands.
  3. Enter your pension contribution as a percentage of salary and how it is taken.
  4. Pick your student loan plan, and tick the box if you also repay a Postgraduate Loan.

Formula

Take-home = Salary − pension − income tax − National Insurance − student loan

Net-pay pensions reduce taxable salary; relief-at-source contributions receive 20% from the provider plus any higher-rate relief. The allowance falls by £1 for every £2 of adjusted net income above £100,000. NI is 8% of earnings between £12,570 and £50,270 plus 2% above. Student loans take 9% (Postgraduate Loan 6%) of earnings above the plan threshold: Plan 1 £26,900, Plan 2 £29,385, Plan 4 £33,795, Plan 5 £25,000, Postgraduate £21,000.

Example

On a £50,000 salary in England with no pension or loan, taxable income is £50,000 − £12,570 = £37,430, all in the 20% band, so income tax is £7,486. National Insurance is 8% × £37,430 = £2,994.40. Take-home pay is £39,519.60 a year, or £3,293.30 a month.

Frequently asked questions

Why is income between £100,000 and £125,140 taxed so heavily?

Each £2 above £100,000 removes £1 of Personal Allowance, so that slice is taxed at an effective 60% in England (plus 2% NI). Pension contributions reduce adjusted net income and can win the allowance back.

Which student loan plan am I on?

Plan 1: started in England or Wales before September 2012, or studied in Northern Ireland. Plan 2: started in England between September 2012 and July 2023, or in Wales from September 2012. Plan 4: Scotland. Plan 5: started in England from August 2023.

My pension uses relief at source — which option do I pick?

Choose relief at source and enter the gross contribution percentage, including the provider’s 20% addition. Extra relief is assumed claimed from HMRC. Non-taxpayers and Scottish starter-rate taxpayers can receive more relief than under net pay.

Why might my payslip differ slightly?

Payroll works period by period and rounds each deduction, and a tax code other than 1257L changes the figures. Bonuses and relief claims can make annual averages differ.
