Convert a German gross salary (Brutto) into net pay (Netto) for 2026. The calculator follows the Federal Finance Ministry's 2026 wage tax programme for tax classes I to VI, adds the solidarity surcharge and optional church tax, and deducts the employee share of pension, unemployment, health and long-term care insurance at the 2026 rates and contribution ceilings.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your gross salary and say whether it is per month or per year.
  2. Choose your tax class (Steuerklasse).
  3. Enter total children, those under 25, and your health insurer's additional contribution (2.9% is the 2026 average).
  4. Choose church tax if you are a church member, and tick Saxony if you work there.

Formula

Net = Gross − Lohnsteuer − Soli − church tax − pension − unemployment − health − care insurance

Wage tax is the § 32a tariff applied to gross pay minus the €1,230 employee allowance, the €36 special-expenses allowance and the Vorsorgepauschale (your pension, health and care contributions). Class III uses the splitting tariff. Pension (9.3%) and unemployment (1.3%) contributions stop at €101,400 a year; health (7.3% plus half the Zusatzbeitrag) and care stop at €69,750. Soli is 5.5% of wage tax above €20,350 (€40,700 in class III), phased in at 11.9%.

Example

A childless employee in class I earning €50,000 a year pays €4,650 pension, €650 unemployment, €4,375 health (8.75%) and €1,200 care insurance (2.4%). The Vorsorgepauschale is €10,075, so taxable income is €38,659 and wage tax is €6,788, matching the BMF test table. No Soli is due. Net pay is €32,337 a year, or €2,694.75 a month.

Frequently asked questions

Which tax class am I in?

Class I: single, divorced or separated. II: single parents. III: married, the higher earner when the spouse is in class V or has no wage. IV: married with similar incomes. V: the lower earner paired with III. VI: a second job.

Is the wage tax my final tax?

Lohnsteuer is a prepayment of income tax. Filing a return can bring money back if your work costs exceed the €1,230 allowance, for example long commutes. Couples in classes III/V must file and may owe extra.

What is not covered?

Private health insurance, reduced midijob contributions, child allowances for Soli and church tax, company cars and other benefits, and one-off payments such as Christmas bonuses.
