Vacation Budget Calculator
Plan a trip budget from flights, lodging, food, local transport and activities, with a safety buffer, cost per person and the monthly savings you need.
A vacation budget usually goes wrong in the small daily costs, not the flight. This calculator splits a trip into the costs that scale with people (fares, meals, tickets), the costs that scale with nights (lodging) and the costs that scale with days (car or transit), then adds a safety buffer. It also tells you how much to set aside each month and each week so the trip is paid for before you leave.
How to use this tool
- Enter how many people are going, the number of trip days and the nights you need lodging.
- Add the round-trip fare per person and the nightly price of the room or rental.
- Estimate food per person per day, local transport per day, and activities per person.
- Add one-off costs such as travel insurance, then choose a buffer (10–15% is common).
- Enter the months until departure and anything already saved to get your savings target.
Formula
Total = (fare × people + lodging × nights + food × people × days + local × days + activities × people + other) × (1 + buffer ÷ 100)
Monthly savings = (total − already saved) ÷ months until the trip. Weekly savings uses 52 ÷ 12 ≈ 4.33 weeks per month.
Example
Two people take an 8-day, 7-night trip. Fares are $450 each ($900), the room is $160 a night ($1,120), food is $60 per person per day ($960), local transport is $30 a day ($240), activities are $200 each ($400) and other costs are $150. That is $3,770 before the buffer; a 10% buffer adds $377 for a total of $4,147, or $2,073.50 per person. Saving over 6 months means putting away about $691.17 a month (about $159.50 a week).
Frequently asked questions
How big should my travel buffer be?
Many travelers use 10% for familiar destinations and 15–20% for first visits, long trips or places where prices are hard to predict. The buffer covers tips, baggage fees, price changes and the odd taxi.
Why are days and nights separate?
A 7-night trip usually spans 8 days of meals and getting around, but you only pay for 7 nights of lodging. Keeping them separate avoids under-budgeting food or over-budgeting the hotel.
Should lodging be per person?
No. Enter the total nightly price of the room or rental, because two people sharing a room usually pay one rate. Food, fares and tickets are per person.
What if I am paying with points or already booked part of the trip?
Enter 0 for anything already covered, or add what you have already paid to the "Already saved" field so the monthly target only covers what is left.
