Tip Calculator
Work out the tip and the total for any bill, choose a tip percentage, tip before or after tax, and split the check evenly between people.
This tip calculator works out how much to leave on a restaurant, bar, delivery or taxi bill, what the total comes to, and what each person owes when the check is split. You can tip on the pre-tax amount, and round the tip or each share up to a whole dollar so nobody has to deal with coins.
How to use this tool
- Enter the bill total as printed on the check.
- Choose the tip percentage you want to leave.
- Enter how many people are splitting the bill.
- Optionally enter the sales tax shown on the receipt to tip on the pre-tax amount only.
- Pick a rounding option if you want whole-dollar amounts.
Formula
Tip = (Bill − Tax) × Tip % ÷ 100
Per person = (Bill + Tip) ÷ People
Leave the tax field at 0 to tip on the full bill. When you round each share up, the tip becomes whatever is left after the bill is covered, so the effective tip rate is shown separately.
Example
A dinner for two costs $86.00 and you want to leave 18%. The tip is 86 × 0.18 = $15.48, the total is $101.48, and each person pays $50.74. With "round each share up" selected, each person pays $51, the total becomes $102 and the effective tip rises to about 18.6%.
Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Either is common. Etiquette guides usually say the pre-tax amount is fine, since tax is not part of the service. Enter the tax from your receipt to see the difference — on most bills it is under a dollar.
How much should I tip at a restaurant in the US?
For sit-down table service, 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is the usual range, with 20% or more for very good service or large parties. Some restaurants add an automatic service charge for big groups, so check the receipt before adding a tip.
How do I split a bill when people ordered different amounts?
Work out the tip percentage once, then apply it to each person's own subtotal: enter each person's share as the bill with 1 person. The equal split here assumes everyone pays the same.
Is tipping expected outside the US?
Customs vary widely. In many countries service is included in the price or a small round-up is normal, so check local practice when travelling.
