Reefer Unit Fuel Consumption Calculator
Estimate how much diesel a reefer unit burns on a trip, what it costs, and how long the tank lasts in continuous or start-stop mode.
A trailer refrigeration unit runs on its own diesel engine and its own tank, so reefer fuel is a separate line in every cold-chain quote. This calculator turns your unit's burn rate into fuel and cost for a trip, shows how much start-stop operation saves compared with continuous running, and warns you when the tank will not last to delivery.
How to use this tool
- Choose gallons or litres and enter the burn rate while the engine runs.
- Enter how many hours the reefer will be switched on for the trip.
- Pick continuous or start-stop, and for start-stop the share of time the engine runs.
- Enter the fuel price, tank size and starting level to see cost and range.
Formula
Fuel = burn rate × hours switched on × engine run share
Continuous mode keeps the engine running all the time (run share 100%). In start-stop mode the engine shuts down once the box is at setpoint and restarts when it drifts, so it runs only part of the time. Hours on the tank = fuel in the tank ÷ (burn rate × run share).
Example
A unit that burns 0.8 gal/h on a 48-hour trip in continuous mode uses 0.8 × 48 = 38.4 gallons. At $3.75 a gallon that is $144.00. A full 50-gallon tank lasts 50 ÷ 0.8 = 62.5 hours, leaving 11.6 gallons at delivery. In start-stop with the engine running half the time, the same trip needs 19.2 gallons.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my reefer's fuel burn rate?
Fill the tank, note the engine-hour meter, run a trip, then fill again. Gallons or litres added divided by engine hours used is your burn rate for that kind of load and weather.
When should I use continuous mode?
Use the operating mode required by the shipper, product and equipment instructions. The calculator compares assumed engine run shares; it does not decide which mode maintains acceptable cargo conditions.
Does this predict the exact refueling time?
No. Burn rate and engine run share can change during a trip, and the model includes no reserve. Base the inputs on relevant records and plan a reserve under your operating procedure.
