Reefer Trailer Pallet Capacity Calculator

Count how many pallets fit in a reefer trailer or reefer container after leaving airflow space at the bulkhead, doors and ceiling, with a payload check.

Measurements
Used only when Pallet size is Custom.
Gap kept between the nose wall and the first pallets so air can return to the unit.
Width you keep free along the walls, both sides added together.
Use the equipment’s marked load line and required overhead space.
A reefer unit and its fuel weigh more than a dry van, so legal payload is lower. Enter 0 to skip.
Used only when Reefer is Custom.

Estimate reefer pallet capacity after subtracting specified front, rear, side and overhead clearances. The calculator compares straight, turned and mixed row or lane layouts and checks height and payload. Trailer and container airflow systems differ, so use clearances from the equipment and loading instructions.

How to use this tool

  1. Pick the reefer trailer or container, or enter a custom inside size.
  2. Pick the pallet size.
  3. Enter the space you keep at the front, at the doors, along the walls and above the load.
  4. Enter the loaded pallet height, the weight per pallet and your maximum cargo weight.

Formula

Usable length = inside length − front space − rear space; pallets = min(floor fit × layers, ⌊payload ÷ pallet weight⌋)

The floor fit tries every split between straight rows (48 in along the trailer) and turned rows (40 in along it), and also side-by-side lanes, and keeps the best. Layers are how many loaded pallets fit under the maximum load height, which is the inside height minus the air space above the load. The tested layouts are a planning estimate, not an exhaustive packing solution. Preset dimensions are illustrative and side clearance is the combined space at both walls.

Example

A 53′ reefer is about 624 × 98 in inside. Leaving 4 in at the bulkhead and 2 in at the doors gives 618 in. Turned 48 × 40 pallets need 40 in of length per row and 96 in across, so 618 ÷ 40 = 15 rows of two: 30 floor positions. With produce at 1,700 lb a pallet and a 43,000 lb payload, the weight allows ⌊25.3⌋ = 25 pallets, so this trailer weighs out before it cubes out.

Frequently asked questions

How many pallets fit in a 53-foot reefer?

Up to 30 standard 48 × 40 pallets loaded turned on one layer, if the inside width is at least 96 in. Loaded straight it is 24 to 26, depending on the space left at the bulkhead and doors. Heavy loads such as produce or frozen meat are often limited by weight to fewer.

Why leave space at the front of a reefer?

Space requirements depend on the unit, bulkhead and airflow design. Enter the required front clearance from the equipment instructions; the default value is only an example.

What is the load line in a reefer container?

The marked maximum cargo height preserves the equipment’s designed airflow. Container systems can supply cold air through the floor and return it above the load. Use the manufacturer’s loading instructions and marked height.
