One single-part name per line, up to 200. Letters, accents, hyphens and apostrophes are accepted; internal spaces are not. Repeated spellings are merged ignoring case. Blank uses the 2010 Census top 100.

Generate first-and-last-name combinations for fictional characters, sample records or brainstorming. Choose a first-name pool and optionally replace the surname list. The generator draws new suggestions when you press Calculate; changing an input prepares the next draw.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose the combined, recorded-female, recorded-male or custom first-name pool.
  2. Optionally enter first or last names one per line and narrow either list with a prefix.
  3. Set a count and decide whether repeats are allowed, then press Calculate.

Formula

Possible names = eligible first names × eligible last names

Blank lines are ignored. Each eligible combination is equally likely; selecting without replacement prevents repeats within a draw.

Example

With a custom first-name list containing Ada and Grace, and a last-name list containing Lee and Kim, there are 4 available names. Requesting all four without repeats returns Ada Lee, Ada Kim, Grace Lee and Grace Kim in random order.

About this name pool

This page combines exactly two components in first-name then surname order. For an optional middle name and a family-first layout, use the full-name generator. Built-in first names are the first 40 entries in each SSA 2020–2025 list; surnames are the top 100 in the 2010 Census table, retained in uppercase.

Frequently asked questions

Are frequent names more likely to appear?

No. Every eligible entry or full-name combination has the same chance. The built-in lists are limited source snapshots, not a simulation of a national population or the current world population.

Can the same name appear again?

Yes, on a later click. The no-repeat setting applies only to one generated list. It cannot establish that a name is unused by a real person, business or fictional character.

Can I use names from another language?

Yes. Custom entries accept Unicode letters and combining accents, with hyphens or apostrophes. Each component must be a single part without spaces. Duplicate spellings are merged without regard to case; the first spelling is retained.
