Random Last Name Generator

Generate surnames from verified source lists or your own pool, with prefix filters and a no-repeat option.

One single-part name per line, up to 200. Letters, accents, hyphens and apostrophes are accepted; internal spaces are not. Repeated spellings are merged ignoring case. Blank uses the 2010 Census top 100.
Optional prefix; matches without regard to letter case.

Generate surnames for fictional characters, example contact lists or a writing exercise. Start with a compact historical U.S. surname pool or replace it with your own. Prefix filtering is useful when you already know an initial but want to explore different endings.

How to use this tool

  1. Leave the surname list blank for the built-in pool, or enter your own single-part names.
  2. Optionally specify a surname prefix, ignoring case.
  3. Set the list size, choose whether names may repeat, and press Calculate.

Formula

Available surnames = distinct eligible list entries

Blank lines are ignored. Each eligible combination is equally likely; selecting without replacement prevents repeats within a draw.

Example

With the custom list Smith, Stone and Lee, prefix S leaves 2 available surnames. Drawing two without repeats returns Smith and Stone in random order. Leaving the prefix blank makes all three eligible.

About this name pool

The built-in list is the top 100 surnames in the 2010 U.S. Census table, with its uppercase spellings preserved. It is explicitly a 2010 snapshot, not a claim about the latest rankings. No demographic percentages are used. A surname does not establish a person’s ancestry, nationality or other personal characteristics; use a custom pool for a specific fictional setting.

Frequently asked questions

Are frequent names more likely to appear?

No. Every eligible entry or full-name combination has the same chance. The built-in lists are limited source snapshots, not a simulation of a national population or the current world population.

Can the same name appear again?

Yes, on a later click. The no-repeat setting applies only to one generated list. It cannot establish that a name is unused by a real person, business or fictional character.

Can I use names from another language?

Yes. Custom entries accept Unicode letters and combining accents, with hyphens or apostrophes. Each component must be a single part without spaces. Duplicate spellings are merged without regard to case; the first spelling is retained.
