Random First Name Generator

Generate name suggestions from verified source lists or your own pool, with prefix filters and a no-repeat option.

One single-part name per line, up to 200. Letters, accents, hyphens and apostrophes are accepted; internal spaces are not. Repeated spellings are merged ignoring case. Used only in custom mode.
Optional prefix; matches without regard to letter case.

Draw given names for a story, game or naming shortlist without adding surnames. Select one of the stored SSA lists, combine them, or supply a list that fits your own setting. A prefix helps narrow suggestions while the no-repeat option keeps each draw distinct.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose a first-name pool; for custom mode, enter one name per line.
  2. Optionally enter the beginning of a name to filter the pool.
  3. Choose 1 to 100 suggestions, set repetition, and press Calculate.

Formula

Available names = distinct entries remaining after the prefix filter

Blank lines are ignored. Each eligible combination is equally likely; selecting without replacement prevents repeats within a draw.

Example

Enter Ada, Anna and Grace as the custom list and use prefix A. There are 2 available names. A request for two without repeats returns Ada and Anna in either order; a request for three is rejected until repeats are allowed.

About this name pool

The built-in pools contain 40 names each from the SSA 2020–2025 recorded-female and recorded-male lists. Those historical record labels describe the source data and do not determine who can use a name. Names are sampled equally, so a first-ranked entry is not favored over the fortieth. Use the general name generator when a surname is also needed.

Frequently asked questions

Are frequent names more likely to appear?

No. Every eligible entry or full-name combination has the same chance. The built-in lists are limited source snapshots, not a simulation of a national population or the current world population.

Can the same name appear again?

Yes, on a later click. The no-repeat setting applies only to one generated list. It cannot establish that a name is unused by a real person, business or fictional character.

Can I use names from another language?

Yes. Custom entries accept Unicode letters and combining accents, with hyphens or apostrophes. Each component must be a single part without spaces. Duplicate spellings are merged without regard to case; the first spelling is retained.
