Germany VAT (MwSt) Calculator — Add or Remove 19% / 7%

Add German VAT (Mehrwertsteuer) to a net price or take it out of a gross price at 19%, 7% or 0%, with net, VAT and gross amounts to the cent.

What do you want to do?

Add or extract German VAT at a rate you have already identified. The standard rate is 19%, selected supplies qualify for 7%, and qualifying photovoltaic supplies can use 0%. The tool shows net, VAT and gross amounts and compares the same input across rates. It calculates one amount at one rate, without deciding the transaction’s legal classification.

How to use this tool

  1. Type the amount in euros.
  2. Choose Add VAT for a net price, or Remove VAT for a price that already includes it.
  3. Select 19%, 7% or 0%.
  4. Read the net price, the VAT and the gross price, and compare the rates in the table.

Formula

Add: VAT = net × rate ÷ 100. Remove: VAT = gross × rate ÷ (100 + rate), net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)

The VAT inside a gross price is rate divided by 100 plus the rate: 19/119 or 7/107. Input amounts are normalized to cents; VAT is rounded to cents and the other price is obtained by addition or subtraction so the displayed amounts reconcile. Invoice-line rounding can differ from rounding an aggregated invoice total.

Example

A freelancer invoices €100 net: 19% VAT is €19, so the invoice total is €119. A restaurant bill for food of €53.50 includes VAT at 7%: €53.50 ÷ 1.07 = €50.00 net, so the VAT is €3.50. If the same bill were drinks, taxed at 19%, the VAT would be €8.54 and the net €44.96.

Frequently asked questions

Which restaurant supplies use 7%?

From 1 January 2026, restaurant and catering services excluding drinks qualify under §12(2)(15). Drinks supplied as part of restaurant service remain at 19%. Separately classified retail or takeaway products still require their applicable product rules; split mixed-rate bills.

Does every solar installation qualify for 0%?

No. §12(3) sets conditions involving the recipient, installation location and eligible components. The law presumes the location condition for registered installed capacity up to 30 kWp. Select zero only after establishing eligibility.

Is 0% the same as a VAT exemption?

No. Small-business and other exemptions can have different invoice and input-tax consequences. The zero option here is arithmetic only; it does not establish exemption, reverse-charge treatment, registration obligations or input-tax entitlement.
