Barcode Scanner

Read EAN-13, UPC-A, UPC-E, EAN-8, Code 128, Code 39 and QR codes from photos in your browser, with check-digit validation and the GS1 prefix.

Read the barcode on a product, a shelf label or a parcel from a photo or screenshot — no app needed. The scanner returns the value and the barcode type, and for retail codes it confirms the check digit and shows the GS1 prefix. Images are decoded in your browser and never uploaded. There is no live camera view: take a photo (the file box offers the camera on phones) and it is scanned at once.

How to use this tool

  1. Photograph the barcode straight on, filling most of the frame, with its blank margins visible.
  2. Drop the photo (or several) into the box, or choose the camera on your phone.
  3. Read the value, format and check-digit result; copy the value with the Copy button.

Formula

Check digit = (10 − (Σ digit × weight) mod 10) mod 10, weights 3, 1, 3 … from the rightmost data digit

EAN, UPC and Code 128 reads are accepted only when their check digit or check character is correct. Code 39 has no mandatory check, so a Code 39 read must agree on at least two scan lines.

Example

A photo of a box with the EAN-13 barcode 4006381333931 returns Format EAN-13, Check digit valid Yes (89 → 1) and GS1 prefix 400 — GS1 Germany. A UPC-A code such as 036000291452 returns prefix 003, GS1 US.

Which browsers read which formats

Chrome and Edge on Android, macOS and ChromeOS have a built-in barcode detector. There the tool reads whatever the device supports, usually EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, Codabar, ITF, QR, Data Matrix, PDF417 and Aztec. Chrome and Edge on Windows and Linux, Firefox and Safari have no such detector, so a decoder built into this page reads EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, Code 128 and Code 39 along about 90 scan lines in four directions, and QR codes with jsQR. On those browsers, Codabar, ITF, Data Matrix, PDF417 and Aztec are not read.

Frequently asked questions

Why was no barcode found?

Common causes are blur, glare, a barcode that fills only a tiny part of the photo, or margins cut off at the edge. Move closer, keep the phone parallel to the label and avoid reflections.

Does the GS1 prefix tell me where a product was made?

No. It shows which national GS1 office issued the company number. A company registered in Germany may make its products anywhere.

Can it read QR codes too?

Yes, through jsQR or the built-in detector. For links, Wi-Fi logins and contact cards, the QR Code Scanner shows the parsed fields as well.
