Alaska Property Tax Calculator

Work out your Alaska property tax from assessed value and your local mill rate, with the $150,000 senior and disabled veteran exemption.

From your borough or city assessment notice
1 mill = $1 per $1,000 of value. A rate shown as 1.5% is 15 mills.
Primary residence with approved eligibility under AS 29.45.030(e), including any applicable survivor/residency requirements; do not tick based on age alone.
Approved dollar reduction beyond the $150,000 above, applying to all entered levies. Do not count the same exemption twice.

Estimate annual local tax on an Alaska home from its assessed value and the applicable mill rate. Alaska has no statewide property tax on homes; borough, city and service-area levies depend on the address. This calculator applies only exemptions already approved by your assessor and assumes the same taxable value applies to every levy included in the rate.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the assessed value from your borough or city assessment notice.
  2. Enter the total mill rate for your tax district, adding together every levy that applies to your address.
  3. Tick the $150,000 exemption only after confirming approval and residency, ownership and occupancy requirements with the local assessor.
  4. Enter only additional approved exemptions beyond that $150,000, without counting an exemption twice.

Formula

Tax = (assessed value − exemptions) × mill rate ÷ 1,000

One mill means $1 per $1,000 of taxable value, so 15 mills is 1.5%. Alaska law provides a $150,000 primary-residence exemption for eligible seniors and veterans with at least 50% service-connected disability; qualifying survivors may also be eligible. Municipalities can grant additional exemptions. Approval, deadlines, ownership shares and residency conditions are determined by the assessor, rather than by this arithmetic.

Example

At $400,000 assessed value and 15 mills, tax without exemptions is $6,000 annually, or $500 monthly. With an approved $150,000 exemption, taxable value becomes $250,000 and annual tax $3,750, saving $2,250. Monthly amounts are budgeting equivalents, not the municipality’s payment schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find my mill rate?

It is printed on your assessment notice and tax bill, and borough and city finance pages publish the rate for each tax district or service area. In Anchorage, for example, the total combines areawide, school district and service-area levies.

How do I claim the exemption?

Apply to the municipal assessor by its deadline and supply the required age, disability, residency and occupancy evidence. Ask whether renewal is needed. Approval must precede treating the exemption as available.

When will this differ from my bill?

Separate assessments, fees, parcel-specific credits or levies with different exempt values need separate calculations. Use current rates from the actual bill; the comparison table contains illustrative rates, not 2026 rates for named municipalities.
