Alaska Sales Tax Calculator 2026
Estimate 2026 sales tax for listed Alaska communities with city and borough rates, seasonal changes, and verified item and transaction caps.
Estimate local Alaska sales tax for a taxable goods purchase during 2026. The calculation combines city and borough rates, seasonal changes and item or transaction caps from ARSSTC schedules. Alaska has no statewide general sales tax; destination boundaries and any special exemptions must be checked separately.
How to use this tool
- Choose the delivery community, or Other for a verified custom rate.
- Enter the price per item and the number of identical items in one transaction.
- Choose a 2026 purchase date; Chignik is supported from June and Old Harbor from September.
- Select groceries only for Homer or Kenai Peninsula Borough outside cities, where the seasonal exemption is modelled.
Formula
Tax = sum of each authority's rate × min(quantity × min(item price, item cap), transaction cap)
An absent cap leaves the full amount taxable. The Kenai Peninsula transaction cap is $500, while Sitka uses $12,000. Juneau caps each item at $15,000 through September and $50,000 from October 1. Palmer changes from 3% to 4% on April 1, with a $1,000 transaction cap. A basket of differently priced items needs a separate calculation because item caps apply individually.
Example
One $1,000 item delivered to Homer in November incurs 3% borough tax and 4.85% city tax, each on $500. Tax is $15 + $24.25 = $39.25. Two $60,000 items in Juneau in October incur 5% on $50,000 each, or $5,000 total tax.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the purchase date matter?
Several communities use seasonal rates. Sitka charges 6% April–September and 5% October–March; Pelican's summer starts in May. The calculator also applies the dated Juneau and Palmer changes and rejects years outside 2026.
Are groceries taxed?
Homer and Kenai Peninsula Borough outside cities tax qualifying non-prepared food only in June–August. Other communities' grocery rules are outside this calculator, so the grocery option is rejected for those destinations.
Which purchases are excluded?
Alcohol, tobacco, lodging, vehicles, services, mixed-price baskets, tax holidays and special local exemptions. Other applies only your entered rate, without caps. Anchorage and Fairbanks have no general sales tax, but special taxes may still apply.
