Truck Loading Time Calculator
Estimate how long it takes to load or unload a truck with pallets or floor-loaded cartons, by crew size, with setup time and a finish time.
Dock schedules, driver detention and appointment times all depend on how long it takes to load a trailer. This calculator estimates loading or unloading time for palletized freight moved by forklift or for floor-loaded cartons stacked by hand, adds setup and paperwork, and gives a finish time for your chosen start.
How to use this tool
- Choose pallets or floor-loaded cartons.
- Enter how many pallets or cartons are going on the truck.
- Enter your crew's speed: minutes per pallet for one forklift, or cartons per hour for one loader.
- Enter the number of forklifts or loaders and the setup time.
- Set the start time to see when the truck can leave.
Formula
Pallets: Handling time = Pallets × Minutes per pallet ÷ Forklifts
Cartons: Handling time = Cartons ÷ (Cartons per hour × Loaders) × 60
Total time = Handling time + Setup time
Speeds should come from your own dock: time a few loads and use the average. Heavy, mixed or fragile freight is slower than uniform pallets, and a long walk from the staging lane to the door adds to every move. Parallel crews are assumed equally productive without interference. Finish time is rounded to the nearest minute; modeled durations are limited to 365 days.
Example
26 pallets at 3 minutes each with one forklift take 78 minutes of handling. Add 20 minutes of setup and paperwork and the total is 1h 38m, so a truck that starts at 08:00 is ready at 09:38. Hand-loading 1,200 cartons with two loaders at 350 cartons an hour each takes about 1h 43m of handling, or 2h 3m with the same setup.
Frequently asked questions
How many pallets fit in a 53-foot trailer?
For an illustrative 630 × 100 in interior, 48 × 40 in pallets form 13 straight rows of two or 15 turned rows of two. Check actual interior dimensions, weight, access and securement; this time calculator does not establish capacity.
Does unloading take as long as loading?
Often less, because pallets don't need to be arranged and braced, but the same method works: time your own dock and enter the minutes per pallet for unloading.
What counts as setup time?
Everything that is not moving freight: checking in, opening and inspecting the trailer, placing the dock plate, strapping or bracing the load, and printing and signing the bill of lading.
