Recipe Scaling Calculator

Scale an ingredient list from its original recipe yield to a new number of servings, preserving each unit and retaining fractional ingredient amounts.

Use decimals, ordinary fractions such as 1/2, or mixed numbers such as 1 1/2. Units are preserved as labels; quantities must be nonnegative.

Multiply a recipe’s ingredient quantities to change its yield while keeping their stated proportions. The original and desired serving counts determine one common scale factor. Each ingredient keeps its own unit, so a list can contain grams, millilitres, cups and counted items without incorrectly combining them.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the number of servings in the original recipe.
  2. Enter the desired serving count using the same portion-size convention.
  3. List ingredient name, quantity and unit on each row, separated by vertical bars.
  4. Inspect the new quantities and decide how to measure fractional counted ingredients.

Formula

Scale factor = desired servings / original servings; new quantity = original quantity × scale factor

Quantities are multiplied before display rounding. Decimal numbers, fractions such as 3/4 and mixed numbers such as 1 1/2 are accepted in ingredient rows. A fractional serving count can represent a proportional yield, but both serving counts must be positive.

Example

Changing a 4-serving recipe to 6 servings gives a factor of 1.5. Its 250 g flour becomes 375 g, 200 mL milk becomes 300 mL, and 1 egg becomes 1.5 eggs. The table preserves those units and does not round the egg quantity up or down.

Frequently asked questions

Will cooking time also increase by the factor?

No. This tool performs ingredient arithmetic only. Pan depth, surface area, equipment and heat transfer affect the method and timing, so the original recipe needs practical reassessment when its size changes.

Does it convert cups into grams?

No. Those measure different quantities and require ingredient-specific information. Use the appropriate ingredient converter first if you want a mass-based list, then scale the quantities.

What should I do with half an egg?

The calculator reports the exact proportional quantity rather than choosing a culinary adjustment for you. You may need a recipe-specific approach to dividing or measuring that ingredient.

Can I paste a whole recipe paragraph?

Use the stated three-column format instead. Instructions, ranges and phrases such as to taste are not parsed. Up to 100 rows and 20,000 characters are accepted; names and unit labels remain literal text.
