Recipe Cost Calculator
Calculate ingredient cost from package price and amount used, then add other batch costs and divide the total across your chosen recipe portions.
Allocate the cost of purchased ingredients to the amount actually used in a recipe. Each row compares a used quantity with a package quantity and price. Add any other cost you want assigned to the whole batch, then divide the total across the portions it produces.
How to use this tool
- Enter one ingredient per row using the five fields shown above.
- Express used amount and package amount in the same unit within that row.
- Enter any additional cost for the entire batch and the number of portions.
- Choose the currency shared by all prices and inspect the cost breakdown.
Formula
Ingredient cost = used quantity / package quantity × package price; batch cost = ingredient subtotal + other cost; cost per portion = batch cost / portions
Different rows may use grams, millilitres or counts, provided each row compares matching quantities. The unit column is descriptive; it does not convert kilograms to grams. Currency selection changes the displayed currency, not the economic value.
Example
Using 250 g from a 1000 g flour package costing $2 allocates $0.50. Using 100 g from 250 g of butter costing $3 allocates $1.20. With $0.50 of other batch cost, the total is $2.20, or $0.55 for each of four portions.
Frequently asked questions
Does the result equal my checkout bill?
Usually not. A checkout may require buying whole packages, while this calculation allocates only the fraction consumed. Leftover inventory remains outside the batch cost unless you choose to charge it here.
How should trimming or waste be handled?
Use the amount purchased that is consumed by the recipe, including its associated waste, or adjust your effective usable package quantity. The tool does not assume a universal waste percentage.
Are labour, energy and packaging included?
Only if you enter them in other batch cost or as suitable rows. Avoid counting the same expense twice. Selling price, profit margin, tax treatment and exchange rates are not determined.
Can free ingredients and fractional packages be entered?
Yes. A zero price or zero used amount gives zero cost. Package quantity and portion count must remain positive. Up to 100 rows and 20,000 text characters are supported.
