Minecraft Overworld to Nether Coordinates Calculator
Convert a list of Minecraft Overworld locations to Nether coordinates and see how much shorter, and faster, each trip is through the Nether.
The Nether is a shortcut. Each Nether block covers eight Overworld blocks horizontally, so a 2,000-block journey shrinks to 250 blocks between two linked portals. List your bases, villages and structures to get the Nether coordinates for each one, plus how far, and how long, the Nether route is compared with crossing the Overworld.
How to use this tool
- List your Overworld locations one per line as Name, X, Z. The first line is your starting point.
- Pick walking or sprinting speed for the travel times.
- Build a portal near each location, and its partner in the Nether at the converted coordinates.
- Connect the Nether portals with a tunnel or ice road, using the distance column to plan it.
Formula
Nether X = floor(X ÷ 8) · Nether Z = floor(Z ÷ 8) · Nether distance = Overworld distance ÷ 8
Distance is the straight horizontal line √(ΔX² + ΔZ²). Times use 5.612 blocks per second for sprinting and 4.317 for walking on flat ground.
Example
From a base at 0, 0 to a stronghold at 1600, 1200, the Overworld trip is √(1600² + 1200²) = 2,000 blocks. In the Nether the stronghold's portal goes at X 200, Z 150 and the trip is only 250 blocks. That is 1,750 blocks shorter and saves about 5 min 12 s of sprinting.
Frequently asked questions
Why round down instead of to the nearest block?
The game converts with floor, which always rounds toward negative infinity. X −100 becomes −12.5 and then block −13, not −12.
How far apart should my portals be?
In Java Edition, Overworld portals less than about 128 blocks apart land within 16 Nether blocks of each other and can link to the same Nether portal. Bedrock searches 128 blocks in the Nether too, so there the Overworld portals need to be roughly 1,024 blocks apart to stay independent.
Does the Y coordinate matter?
Not for the conversion. Only X and Z are divided by 8, so you can paste X, Y, Z and the Y value is ignored.
How do I convert Nether coordinates back?
Multiply X and Z by 8. The Nether portal calculator linked below converts in both directions.
