Minecraft Nether Portal Calculator

Convert Minecraft coordinates between the Overworld and the Nether (divide or multiply X and Z by 8) to place a linked Nether portal in the right spot.

Convert
Copied across unchanged

One block of travel in the Nether equals eight blocks in the Overworld, which is why players build Nether highways and link portals to distant bases. For two portals to connect to each other, the Nether portal has to sit at the Overworld X and Z divided by 8 (and the other way round, multiplied by 8). Enter the coordinates from the F3 screen in Java or the Show Coordinates option in Bedrock to get the matching point in the other dimension.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose which way you are converting.
  2. Enter the X, Y and Z of your existing portal or of the place you want to reach.
  3. Build the new portal at the result, as close to it as you can.
  4. Walk through to test. If you come out at a different portal, that one was closer to the target than your new one.

Formula

Nether X = floor(Overworld X ÷ 8) · Nether Z = floor(Overworld Z ÷ 8) · Y unchanged

Going back, multiply X and Z by 8. floor rounds toward negative infinity, so −12.5 becomes block −13, the same way the game counts negative coordinates.

Example

An Overworld portal at X 1250, Y 70, Z −840 divides to X 156.25 and Z −105 in the Nether. Rounded down to blocks, build the Nether portal at X 156, Y 70, Z −105. In the other direction, a Nether portal at X 100, Z −150 leads to X 800, Z −1200 in the Overworld.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my portal take me to the wrong place?

The game links to the nearest existing portal within its search area instead of building a new one. In Java Edition that area reaches 128 blocks in the Overworld but only 16 in the Nether, so Overworld portals less than about 128 blocks apart can share one Nether portal unless each has its own portal at the exact converted point.

Is the Y coordinate divided by 8?

No. Only the horizontal X and Z are scaled. When the game has to generate a portal, it looks for space near the target X and Z at any height, so it can appear far above or below you. Building your own at the converted point avoids surprises.

Does this work in Bedrock Edition?

Yes, the 8:1 ratio is the same. Bedrock searches 128 blocks for an existing portal in both dimensions, so Nether portals there need to be well over 128 blocks apart to stay separate.

What happens near the world border?

Destinations are kept inside the world border, so a Nether position beyond about ±3,749,998 cannot send you further out in the Overworld.
