Game Name Generator

Generate video game title ideas by theme and style, optionally built around your own keyword, with a list you can copy and check for conflicts.

A word you want in every name, such as your main character or setting.
Change it for a new list; the same number always gives the same list.

A good game title is short, easy to say and hints at the mood of the game. This generator builds title ideas from theme-specific word lists in five common naming patterns: single compound words, two-word titles, "The X of Y", titles with a subtitle and "X & Y" pairs. Add a keyword, such as your hero or your world, and every name is built around it.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose a theme that matches the tone of your game, or mix all themes.
  2. Pick a naming style, or leave it on a mix of styles.
  3. Optionally type a keyword that must appear in every name.
  4. Set how many names you want, and change the set number for a new list.

Formula

Name = pattern filled from the theme lists (prefix + suffix, adjective + noun, noun + place …)

Each theme has 12 adjectives, 12 nouns, 10 prefixes, 10 suffixes and 8 places. A seeded random generator picks a style and words, and duplicates are skipped. Possible combinations is the number of distinct names the chosen theme and style can produce; a keyword takes the place of the prefix or the noun, which narrows the count.

Example

With the Sci-fi theme and all styles mixed, the lists can produce 14,872 different names: 100 one-word names (10 × 10), 144 two-word names, 96 "The X of Y" names, 14,400 titles with subtitles and 132 "X & Y" pairs. Typing Zephyr into the keyword box with the Fantasy theme cuts that to 186, because every name must now contain Zephyr.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good video game name?

Two or three syllables per word, a clear hint of genre or mood, and a spelling people can type into a store search after hearing it once. Test the shortlist by saying it aloud to someone and asking them to write it down.

How do I check that a game name is free to use?

Search the main game stores, run a trademark search in the countries where you will sell, and check that a matching domain and social handles are available. This tool does not check any of these for you.

Why are some names a little strange?

Random combinations sometimes clash. Treat the list as raw material: combine the first half of one name with the second half of another, or tweak a word until it fits your game.

Can I get the same list again later?

Yes. Keep the same set number and options, or copy the page link, and the generator returns the identical list.
