Cups to Grams Cocoa Converter

Convert cocoa from US or metric cups to grams and kilograms using stated ingredient reference weights and preparation conditions.

Estimate the grams of unsweetened cocoa powder in a measured number of cups. The tool also shows kilograms and the corresponding volume, making it easier to adapt a volume-based baking recipe to a scale. It uses a named household-weight reference rather than treating cocoa like water.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose the ingredient state that matches what you will actually measure.
  2. Select a US customary cup or a 250 mL metric cup.
  3. Enter the number of cups as a decimal, such as 0.75 for three quarters.
  4. Read the estimated mass and use the reference table to check other quantities.

Formula

grams = cups × reference grams per US cup × selected cup mL ÷ 236.5882365

The metric option assumes the same bulk density as the reference US cup. It is a proportional estimate, not a separate laboratory measurement. Zero cups gives zero mass.

Example

For 0.75 US cup of unsweetened cocoa powder, the reference gives 0.75 × 86 = 64.5 g, or 0.0645 kg. Its volume is about 177.4412 mL. A 250 mL cup is larger, so selecting the metric option changes the mass even when the entered cup count stays the same.

Reference and scope

USDA’s 2002 table lists 86 grams for one cup of unsweetened cocoa powder. This estimate is for the powder, not drinking chocolate, sweetened cocoa mix, melted chocolate or prepared hot cocoa. Brand, moisture and how tightly powder settles in the cup affect the actual mass. A recipe’s own gram measurement is usually the most useful target.

Frequently asked questions

Is cocoa powder 100 grams per cup?

There is no exact universal cup weight. This calculator uses the USDA household reference of 86 g and identifies it beside the result.

Can I use this for hot chocolate powder?

No. Added sugar and other ingredients change the bulk density. Use the specific mixture’s package weight.

Why does a tablespoon conversion sometimes disagree?

Published household measures are rounded separately. This tool consistently scales the USDA cup weight; it does not multiply a separately rounded tablespoon weight.
