Cups to Grams Brown Sugar Converter

Convert brown sugar from US or metric cups to grams and kilograms using stated ingredient reference weights and preparation conditions.

Convert cups of brown sugar to an estimated weight while keeping packed and unpacked measures separate. Choose the preparation stated in your recipe, then select a US or metric cup. The calculator returns grams, kilograms and the volume represented by the entered cups.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose the ingredient state that matches what you will actually measure.
  2. Select a US customary cup or a 250 mL metric cup.
  3. Enter the number of cups as a decimal, such as 0.75 for three quarters.
  4. Read the estimated mass and use the reference table to check other quantities.

Formula

grams = cups × reference grams per US cup × selected cup mL ÷ 236.5882365

The metric option assumes the same bulk density as the reference US cup. It is a proportional estimate, not a separate laboratory measurement. Zero cups gives zero mass.

Example

For 0.75 US cup of packed brown sugar, calculate 0.75 × 220 = 165 g, or 0.165 kg. Using the unpacked setting instead gives 0.75 × 145 = 108.75 g. The difference comes from the selected packing state, not from changing the size of the cup.

Reference and scope

USDA’s 2002 reference lists 220 grams for a packed cup of brown sugar and 145 grams for an unpacked cup. Packing changes how much sugar occupies the same container. These are household estimates: moisture, lumps and the measuring technique still affect the actual mass, so a recipe’s own gram quantity should take priority.

Frequently asked questions

What does packed brown sugar mean?

It means the sugar has been pressed into the measuring cup rather than left loose. Use the state specified by the recipe; the calculator cannot infer it from the cup quantity.

Are light and dark brown sugar separate settings?

No. The cited USDA table distinguishes packing, not light versus dark varieties. Use a product or recipe weight when that distinction matters.

Can I apply this to white sugar?

No. Granulated and powdered white sugars have their own reference cup weights. This tool’s two settings are specifically for brown sugar.
