Courier Fee Calculator
Estimate a courier or express parcel fee from your rate card: volumetric vs actual weight, rounding, fuel surcharge, extra fees, insurance and tax.
Courier and express carriers bill a parcel on whichever is greater, its actual weight or its volumetric weight, then add fuel surcharges and extra fees. This calculator applies those rules to the rate card you have, so you can price a shipment, check an invoice or see how much a smaller box would save before you book.
How to use this tool
- Choose cm and kg or inches and pounds, and enter the number of identical parcels.
- Enter the actual weight and the outer dimensions of one parcel.
- Pick your carrier's volumetric divisor and weight rounding.
- Enter the base fee, the weight it includes and the price per extra kg or lb, then the fuel surcharge, other fees, insurance and tax.
Formula
Volumetric weight = L × W × H ÷ divisor; chargeable weight = max(actual, volumetric), rounded up
Fee = (base + max(0, chargeable − included) × rate + surcharges) × (1 + fuel %) + insurance, then selected tax
A divisor of 5,000 cm³/kg gives 1 kg per 5,000 cm³. A tariff divisor of 139 in³/lb is a separate convention, not exactly equivalent. Apply any carrier dimension-rounding rules to your dimensions first. This model applies fuel to transport and all entered surcharges, excludes insurance from fuel, and taxes the full subtotal; check whether that matches your quote.
Example
A 2 kg parcel in a 40 × 30 × 20 cm box has a volumetric weight of 24,000 ÷ 5,000 = 4.8 kg, which rounds up to 5 kg. With a $10 base fee covering 1 kg and $3 for each extra kg, transport costs 10 + 4 × 3 = $22. A 10% fuel surcharge adds $2.20, for a total of $24.20.
Frequently asked questions
Why am I charged for more than my parcel weighs?
Because the box takes up space on the vehicle or aircraft. When its volumetric weight is higher than the actual weight, the carrier bills the volumetric figure.
How can I lower a courier fee?
Use the smallest box that protects the item. Reducing all three dimensions of a 40 × 30 × 20 cm box by 5 cm gives 35 × 25 × 15 / 5,000 = 2.625 kg, compared with 4.8 kg originally. Billing rounding and extra fees still apply.
Which divisor does my carrier use?
It is printed in the carrier's service guide and can differ between domestic, international and economy services. Check the guide for the exact service you book.
