Container Weight Limit & VGM Calculator

Check a container load against its maximum gross weight: verified gross mass (VGM), payload left, percent used and an optional road weight check.

Weight unit
Printed on the door and CSC plate (TARE).
Printed on the door and CSC plate (MAX GROSS / MGW).
All goods with their packaging.
For a road check. Leave 0 to skip.
For example 80,000 lb on US Interstate highways. Leave 0 to skip.

Add cargo, packing material and container tare to estimate packed gross mass, then compare it with an entered container maximum. The result is the arithmetic used in a Method 2 VGM calculation; entering numbers does not certify a verified weight. An optional road comparison checks total vehicle mass only.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose kilograms or pounds.
  2. Enter the tare and maximum gross weight from the container door, or pick a typical preset.
  3. Enter the cargo weight and the weight of pallets, dunnage and lashing.
  4. Optionally add the tractor and chassis weight and your road gross weight limit.

Formula

VGM = cargo + pallets, dunnage and lashing + container tare

Remaining capacity = maximum gross weight − VGM

Maximum payload is maximum gross minus tare. SOLAS Method 2 requires certified weighing approved in the packing country, including packages, securing materials and tare. For the optional gross-road comparison, vehicle mass = packed container + tractor/chassis. Enter a road limit to enable it; a zero tractor/chassis entry means that mass is omitted. Axle, bridge and route limits are not calculated.

Example

A 20′ box with a 2,230 kg tare and a 30,480 kg maximum gross weight carries 20,000 kg of cargo and 500 kg of pallets and dunnage. The VGM is 20,000 + 500 + 2,230 = 22,730 kg, leaving 7,750 kg of capacity. The payload used is 20,500 ÷ 28,250 = 72.6%.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find the tare and maximum gross weight?

Use the container markings and its actual safety plate. Maximum operating gross mass is on the CSC plate; tare is normally marked on the container door. Illustrative presets cannot replace the actual values.

Can I load right up to the maximum gross weight?

Container gross capacity alone does not establish road legality. In the US, the general federal Interstate gross limit is 80,000 lb, with axle/bridge constraints and exceptions. Use route-specific limits and any applicable permits.

What is the difference between Method 1 and Method 2?

Method 1 weighs the packed and sealed container, for example on a weighbridge. Method 2 weighs every package and all packing and securing material, then adds the tare.

Does weight distribution matter?

Yes. Spread heavy cargo evenly along the floor and keep the centre of gravity near the middle; a load concentrated at one end can overload an axle even when the total is legal.
