Arizona Sales Tax Calculator (2026 TPT)

Add Arizona sales tax (transaction privilege tax) to a price or find it in a total: 5.6% state rate plus your county and city rates, with groceries handled.

Your county excise rate from the Arizona Department of Revenue rate table (it is not charged on groceries).
Confirmed general-retail rate for the sale date and location; zero outside a city or if no city levy applies. Not used for groceries.
Used only for eligible groceries. Enter the city food-for-home-consumption rate separately; do not reuse a general-retail rate. Zero means no city food tax.
The amount is

Estimate an Arizona retail receipt using the 5.6% state transaction privilege tax rate plus confirmed county and city rates. TPT legally taxes the seller’s business activity and is often passed through to customers. This calculator uses rates you supply; it does not look up an address, identify the governing jurisdiction or select rates for a historical sale date.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the price, or the total if tax is already included.
  2. Choose general retail or groceries for home consumption.
  3. Enter the county and general-retail city rates, or the separate confirmed city grocery rate for eligible food.
  4. Choose whether to add tax or find the tax inside a total.

Formula

Tax = price × (5.6 + county rate + city rate) ÷ 100; price = total ÷ (1 + combined rate ÷ 100)

Eligible food for home consumption sold by a qualifying retailer is exempt from state and corresponding county retail tax; a city may still tax it. Select its food rate separately. Input prices and tax round to cents. The displayed jurisdiction allocation reconciles to the rounded combined tax and is illustrative rather than a seller’s return computation.

Example

A $100 retail purchase where the county rate is 0.7% and the city rate is 2.8%: the combined rate is 5.6 + 0.7 + 2.8 = 9.1%, so the tax is $9.10 ($5.60 state, $0.70 county, $2.80 city) and the total is $109.10. Buying $80 of groceries in a city that taxes food at 2% costs just $1.60 in tax.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find the correct local rates?

Use ADOR’s rate table or address lookup for the sale date. General retail normally uses business code 017; food may use separate city treatment. Enter only the county component and city component, not an already combined rate.

Does every food sale qualify for exemption?

No. The state exemption depends on eligible food, home consumption and a qualifying retailer under §42-5102. Restaurant meals and on-premises consumption need their own classification. A city’s grocery rate can differ from its general retail rate.

Which transactions are outside this estimate?

Tiered single-item rates, vehicle-specific adjustments, restaurants, lodging, construction, use tax, special districts, deductions and exemptions beyond eligible groceries need separate treatment. One uniform rate is applied to the entire entered amount; split mixed purchases first.
