Text Statistics — Words, Characters, Sentences & Reading Time
Get full text statistics: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, unique words, average lengths, reading and speaking time.
Paste any text to get a full set of statistics in one place: words, characters with and without spaces, letters, digits, punctuation, sentences, paragraphs, lines, unique words, average word and sentence length, the longest word, and how long the text takes to read silently or aloud. A letter-frequency table shows which letters you use most. It is handy for essays with word limits, social posts with character caps and talks with a time slot.
How to use this tool
- Paste or type your text.
- Adjust the reading speed if you know your audience reads faster or slower than 238 words per minute.
- Set the speaking speed for a talk or video script (about 150 words per minute is typical).
- Read the counts; the letter-frequency table is below the results.
Formula
Reading time = words ÷ reading speed · Speaking time = words ÷ speaking speed
Times are rounded to the nearest second. Average word length is letters and digits per word; average sentence length is words ÷ sentences. A sentence ends at . ! ? or … followed by a space, or at a blank line, and paragraphs are separated by blank lines.
Example
The cold brew sample has 89 words, 498 characters (411 without spaces), 7 sentences and 2 paragraphs. At 238 words per minute it takes 89 ÷ 238 = 0.374 minutes — about 22 seconds — to read, and at 150 words per minute about 36 seconds to say aloud. The longest word is "concentrate" (11 letters), and the most common letter is e, at 15.37% of all letters.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the reading speed set to 238 words per minute?
A 2019 review of 190 studies by Marc Brysbaert found that adults read English non-fiction silently at about 238 words per minute on average (about 260 for fiction). Change the number if you know your readers.
Do spaces and line breaks count as characters?
Spaces count in "Characters" but not in "Characters without spaces". Line breaks are not counted in either, which matches how most word processors report characters.
Why does my word count differ from my word processor?
This tool splits punctuation-separated letter/digit runs and retains internal hyphens and apostrophes. Han and kana runs are not linguistically segmented. Other tools may instead split only at whitespace.
How are emoji counted?
As one character each, even when an emoji is built from several code points, such as a thumbs-up with a skin tone or a flag.
