Letter Counter
Count the letters in any text, with vowels, consonants, capitals, a full A–Z frequency table and a check for missing letters.
Count the letters in any text — not the spaces, digits or punctuation — and see how many are vowels, consonants, capitals and lower case. A full A–Z table shows how often each letter appears and which letters are missing, which helps with word puzzles, pangrams, cryptograms, name games and fields that limit letters rather than characters.
How to use this tool
- Paste or type your text.
- Optionally type one letter or a group such as “th” to count just that.
- Choose whether accented letters count as their base letter (é as e, ü as u).
- Sort the A–Z table alphabetically or by frequency.
Formula
Share of a letter = its count ÷ all A–Z letters × 100
A letter is any character Unicode classes as a letter, so é, ß, ж and 한 all count toward the total. Vowels are A, E, I, O and U; Y is counted as a consonant. The table lists only the 26 basic Latin letters, and letter groups are counted without overlaps.
Example
“The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” has 35 letters in 9 words: 11 vowels and 24 consonants, with one capital (T). Every letter from A to Z appears at least once, so the missing-letters row reads “None”. The most common letter is O, used 4 times — 11.43% of the letters.
Frequently asked questions
Is Y a vowel or a consonant?
It can sound like either (“yes” versus “gym”). This tool counts Y as a consonant so the vowel total is always the five letters A, E, I, O and U; add the Y count from the table if you want to treat it as a vowel.
Does the letter count include spaces and numbers?
No. Spaces, digits, punctuation and emoji are left out. Digits are shown in their own row, and the Character Counter gives the full character total.
What is a pangram?
A sentence that uses every letter of the alphabet at least once, such as “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog” or “Pack my box with five dozen liquor jugs”. When the missing-letters row says none, your text is a pangram.
How are accented letters handled?
With the option ticked, é, ü and ñ count toward E, U and N in the table and the vowel total. Untick it to keep them separate; they then appear under “Letters outside A–Z”.
