Planting Density Calculator — Rectangular Rows
Calculate rectangular planting density and theoretical positions from row spacing, within-row spacing and net planted area.
Calculate how many regularly spaced planting positions correspond to a net planted area. The model uses straight, equally spaced rows and a constant distance between positions along each row. It reports positions per square metre, hectare and acre, plus the continuous area-based total.
How to use this tool
- Measure row-centre spacing and spacing along a row.
- Choose the common unit used by both distances.
- Enter net planted area after excluding paths and headlands.
- Review density and the theoretical position total before laying out the actual field.
Formula
Area per position = row spacing × within-row spacing; density = 1 / area per position; positions = net area × density
Distances are converted to metres and area to square metres. This is a rectangular-grid model with one planting position per cell. It does not assume staggered triangles, multiple seeds in a hole or a survival percentage.
Example
Rows 50 cm apart with positions 20 cm apart allocate 0.5 × 0.2 = 0.1 m² per position. Density is 10 positions/m². Across 100 m² of net planted area, the theoretical total is 1,000 positions.
Frequently asked questions
Why can the total contain a fraction of a plant?
It is an area ratio, not a count of marked points inside a particular boundary. Field dimensions, margins and whether a plant sits on each end change the actual whole-number count.
Does this recommend a crop spacing?
No. Supply distances suitable for your variety, machinery, soil and production system. Equal mathematical density does not mean two different row arrangements have equal agronomic results.
Are positions the same as established plants?
Only if every position is filled and survives. For seed requirements, separately account for emergence and seed quality. This tool deliberately reports positions so it does not silently assume those biological outcomes.
