Crop Yield Calculator — From a Measured Sample
Convert measured harvest mass and sampled area into yield per hectare or acre and an extrapolated harvest for your cropped area.
Turn a measured harvest sample into a mass-per-area yield and a whole-area extrapolation. Enter the product mass actually collected, the area it represents, and the cropped area you want to scale to. Kilograms, pounds, hectares, acres and smaller garden areas are supported independently.
How to use this tool
- Weigh the harvested product from a measured sample area.
- Select the sample mass and area units.
- Enter the total cropped area, excluding unplanted land.
- Read the extrapolated mass and compare the sampled share with your sampling plan.
Formula
Yield = measured mass / sampled area; extrapolated harvest = yield × total cropped area
Conversions are performed before comparison. One hectare is 10,000 square metres; one international-foot acre is exactly 4,046.8564224 square metres. The sampled area must be positive and cannot exceed the total cropped area.
Example
A sample produces 25 kg from 50 m². Its yield is 0.5 kg/m², or 5,000 kg/ha. Applied uniformly to a 2 ha cropped field, that gives 10,000 kg. The sample covers 0.25% of that field.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a forecast of what my crop will produce?
It is a proportional extrapolation of your measurement. A small or selectively chosen sample may not represent the field. The tool does not estimate sampling uncertainty or model future weather and growth.
Should I include moisture or shells?
Use the same product and moisture basis throughout. Grain, unshelled heads and dry grain are different measurements. Drying, shelling and moisture corrections must be performed before entering the mass if they are needed.
Can I combine several sample plots?
Add their harvested masses and their nonoverlapping sampled areas first, then enter those totals. This weights plots by area rather than taking an unweighted average of yields from differently sized plots.
