Mixed Number Calculator

Add, subtract, multiply or divide mixed numbers like 2 3/4. Get the answer as a mixed number, improper fraction and decimal, with steps.

Leave the numerator empty (or 0) for a whole number. For a negative number, put the minus on the whole part.

Add, subtract, multiply or divide mixed numbers such as 2 3/4 and get the answer as a mixed number, an improper fraction and a decimal. The steps follow the method taught in school: convert to improper fractions, do the operation, simplify, then turn the result back into a mixed number.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the whole part, numerator and denominator of the first number. Leave the fraction empty for a whole number.
  2. Choose +, −, × or ÷.
  3. Enter the second number. For a negative mixed number, put the minus sign on the whole part.
  4. Read the result and the working listed underneath.

Formula

w n/d = (w × d + n) / d for w ≥ 0; −w n/d = −(w × d + n) / d

Convert each mixed number to an improper fraction, then add or subtract over a common denominator, multiply numerators and denominators, or multiply by the reciprocal to divide. To convert back, divide the numerator by the denominator: the quotient is the whole part and the remainder is the new numerator.

Example

1 1/2 + 2 3/4: 1 1/2 = 3/2 and 2 3/4 = 11/4. Over the common denominator 4 that is 6/4 + 11/4 = 17/4. Because 17 ÷ 4 = 4 remainder 1, the answer is 4 1/4, or 4.25. Multiplying the same two numbers instead gives 3/2 × 11/4 = 33/8 = 4 1/8.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add the whole numbers and the fractions separately?

For addition and subtraction, yes: 1 + 2 = 3 and 1/2 + 3/4 = 1 1/4, so the total is 4 1/4. For multiplication, no — 1 1/2 × 2 3/4 is 4 1/8, not 2 3/8 — so always convert to improper fractions first.

How do negative mixed numbers work?

−2 1/3 means −(2 + 1/3) = −7/3, not −2 + 1/3. That is why the minus sign goes on the whole part only.

Can the fraction part be larger than 1, like 1 5/4?

Yes. It is read as 1 + 5/4 = 9/4, and the answer is always written in standard form with a proper fraction part.

How do I get a decimal from a mixed number?

Divide the numerator by the denominator and add the whole part: 2 3/8 = 2 + 0.375 = 2.375.
