Shows its name, code points and HTML entity

Browse emoji by category, choose a skin tone and copy what you need. Every emoji is listed with its short name from the Unicode emoji charts, its code points and an HTML entity, so you can paste it into a message, a document or a web page and know exactly which character it is.

How to use this tool

  1. Pick a category, from Smileys & Emotion to Flags.
  2. Choose a skin tone; it is applied to every hand and person emoji that supports one.
  3. Copy single emoji from the table, or the whole set from the box at the top.
  4. Paste any emoji into “Look up an emoji” to see its name and codes.

Formula

HTML entity = &#x + hexadecimal code point + ;

An emoji can be one code point (🍕 U+1F355) or a sequence: a base plus a skin-tone modifier (👍🏽 U+1F44D U+1F3FD), two regional-indicator letters for a flag (🇯🇵 = J + P), or several emoji joined by the zero-width joiner U+200D. U+FE0F asks for the colourful emoji style on characters such as ❤️ that also have a plain text form.

Example

Looking up 👍🏽 returns the name thumbs up: medium skin tone, code points U+1F44D U+1F3FD and the HTML entity 👍🏽. Switching the category to People & Body with the medium tone shows 74 emoji, 69 of them with the medium skin tone applied ; brain, eyes, eye, mouth and family have no skin-tone versions.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a built-in emoji picker on my computer?

Yes. On Windows 10 and 11 press the Windows key and . (full stop) together. On a Mac press Control + Command + Space, or the Globe key on newer keyboards. On phones, use the emoji key on the on-screen keyboard.

Why do some emoji show as a box or as two separate pictures?

The font on that device does not have the emoji yet. Recently added emoji and some joined sequences need an up-to-date operating system; older systems show a box or the separate parts.

Will the emoji look the same for the person I send it to?

Not exactly. Apple, Google, Microsoft and Samsung each draw their own artwork for the same code point, so the meaning is the same but the picture can differ.

Which skin tones are available?

Five, based on the Fitzpatrick scale: light, medium-light, medium, medium-dark and dark (U+1F3FB to U+1F3FF). Without a modifier, hands and people appear in the default yellow.
