Color Scheme Generator
Build complementary, analogous, triadic, split, tetradic or monochromatic HSL palettes from a HEX color and download a PNG swatch strip.
Create a small digital palette from one HEX color. The generator rotates its hue on the HSL wheel or varies lightness for a monochromatic set. Read the exact codes in a table and download the swatch strip to compare the colors in a design.
How to use this tool
- Enter an opaque three- or six-digit HEX color.
- Choose the palette relationship.
- Compare the preview with the HEX table and download the PNG if useful.
- Check foreground and background contrast separately before using a palette for text.
Formula
Complement: H+180°; triad: H,H+120°,H+240°; square tetrad: H,H+90°,H+180°,H+270°
Analogous uses H − 30°, H, H + 30°; split complementary uses H, H + 150°, H + 210°. Rotated schemes preserve HSL saturation and lightness. Monochromatic mode fixes lightness at 20, 35, 50, 65 and 80 percent. Hues wrap around 360 degrees.
Example
A pure-red base, #FF0000, has HSL 0°, 100%, 50%. A triadic scheme adds 120° and 240°, producing #00FF00 and #0000FF. These are numeric HSL relationships, not a promise of equal perceived brightness.
Output
The PNG contains only swatches, while the table preserves the construction values and HEX codes. HSL is a digital sRGB model. Paint mixing, print profiles and perceptual uniformity require different models.
Frequently asked questions
Why do gray swatches repeat?
Gray has zero saturation. Rotating an arbitrary hue cannot create chroma, so the rotated results remain gray. Monochromatic mode can still produce lighter and darker grays.
Does every palette include the original color?
Rotated schemes do. Monochromatic mode uses the listed fixed lightness levels, so it includes the original only when that lightness is one of those levels after rounding.
Are these colors accessible together?
A harmony relationship does not establish readable contrast. Evaluate each actual foreground and background pairing at its intended size and use.
