WAR Calculator — Position-Player Run Components
Aggregate supplied position-player run components and runs per win into WAR, showing replacement-level and average-level totals.
Convert already evaluated position-player run components into wins above replacement. Enter batting, baserunning, fielding, positional, league and replacement values from one consistent system, together with its runs-per-win figure. This calculator performs the final aggregation; it cannot reconstruct full WAR from a batting line or ordinary box score.
How to use this tool
- Obtain the six run components from a documented, consistent methodology.
- Check that positional and league adjustments have not already been included elsewhere.
- Enter that methodology’s runs-per-win value for the matching period.
- Inspect the run totals and WAR before rounding to one decimal.
Formula
RAR = batting + baserunning + fielding + positional + league + replacement runs; WAR = RAR / runs per win
The first five components are relative to average; replacement runs change the reference point. Positive and negative evaluated components are allowed, while replacement runs are nonnegative. No league constants or position values are inferred here.
Example
The hypothetical defaults sum to 20 + 2 + 5 + 2.5 + 0.5 + 20 = 50 runs above replacement. With 10 runs per win, the result is 5.0 WAR. The first five components alone total 30 runs above average.
Frequently asked questions
Will this reproduce a player’s published WAR exactly?
Only if the supplied components and denominator match that provider’s precise methodology and precision. Mixing providers or using rounded component displays can change the result.
Can I enter a defensive total that already includes position?
Do not count that adjustment twice. Separate fielding and position consistently, or put the combined amount in one field and zero in the other while retaining the same total.
Does it calculate pitcher WAR?
No. Pitcher systems use additional run-prevention, park, innings, replacement and sometimes leverage calculations. A pitcher’s FIP or ERA alone is not a substitute for these position-player components.
