Speed is distance divided by time. Use this calculator to find any one of the three from the other two: your speed on a drive or a run, how far you will get at a given speed, or how long a trip will take. Answers are converted between km/h, mph, m/s and knots, and the matching running or cycling pace per kilometre and per mile is shown as well.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose what to solve for: speed, distance or time.
  2. Enter the distance and pick its unit (skip this when solving for distance).
  3. Enter the time in hours, minutes and seconds (skip this when solving for time).
  4. Enter the speed and its unit when solving for distance or time.
  5. Read the answer and the conversions below it.

Formula

speed = distance ÷ time · distance = speed × time · time = distance ÷ speed

Everything is converted to metres and seconds first. 1 mile = 1,609.344 m, 1 nautical mile = 1,852 m, 1 knot = one nautical mile per hour, and 1 m/s = 3.6 km/h. Pace is the reciprocal of speed: time per kilometre or per mile.

Example

A 10 km run finished in 50 minutes is 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 12 km/h. That is about 7.46 mph or 3.33 m/s, and a pace of 5:00 per kilometre, or 8:03 per mile.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between speed and pace?

Speed is distance per unit of time (km/h); pace is time per unit of distance (minutes per km). Runners prefer pace because it maps directly onto split times. 12 km/h is 60 ÷ 12 = 5 minutes per kilometre.

Is this my average or my top speed?

It is the average over the full duration, including stops. Peak speed is at least the average and can be higher; constant-speed travel is the equality case.

How do I convert km/h to mph?

Divide by 1.609344, so 100 km/h ≈ 62.14 mph. To go from mph to km/h, multiply by 1.609344.

What is a knot?

A knot is one nautical mile per hour, about 1.15 mph. The nautical mile is defined as exactly 1,852 metres; it was historically related to a minute of latitude, whose actual length varies with location.
