BMI Calculator for Men
BMI calculator for men: your BMI and category, healthy weight range, estimated body fat, ideal weight (Devine) and waist risk check in US or metric units.
For adults aged 20 and over, men use the same BMI formula and categories as women, but BMI is especially easy to misread in men: a muscular build can push it into the overweight range, while fat around the belly can hide behind a normal number. This calculator adds a body fat estimate, the Devine ideal body weight and a waist check against the NIH threshold for men.
How to use this tool
- Enter your age, then your height and weight in US or metric units.
- Optionally measure your waist just above the hip bones and enter it.
- Read your BMI, category and healthy weight range for your height.
- Compare the body fat estimate, ideal weight and waist results.
Formula
BMI = kg ÷ m²; estimated body fat % = 1.2 × BMI + 0.23 × age − 16.2; Devine ideal weight = 50 kg + 2.3 kg × (height in inches − 60)
The body fat equation is Deurenberg’s (1991) adult formula with the male sex term (−10.8) included. The Devine formula is used in medicine as a reference weight, for example for some drug doses; it is not a target. A waist over 40 in (101.6 cm) raises the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes in men (NIH). Classification uses the unrounded BMI; displayed boundary weights are rounded. The body-fat estimate is withheld outside the study BMI range of 13.9–40.9 or above age 83. Its 4.1-point standard error is not a personal accuracy guarantee.
Example
A 40-year-old man who is 5 ft 10 in (177.8 cm) and 190 lb (86.2 kg) has a BMI of 86.18 ÷ 1.778² = 27.3, in the overweight range; the healthy range for his height is 128.9 to under 174.2 lb. His estimated body fat is 1.2 × 27.3 + 0.23 × 40 − 16.2 ≈ 26%, and his Devine ideal body weight is 50 + 2.3 × 10 = 73 kg, or 160.9 lb.
Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy BMI for men?
18.5 to under 25, the same as for women. From 25 to under 30 is overweight and 30 or more is obesity, for all adults aged 20 and over.
I lift weights. Is my BMI wrong?
BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat. Waist measurements and a clinical assessment can add context, but a low waist ratio does not prove that a high BMI is harmless.
Why does waist size matter so much for men?
Men tend to store fat around the abdomen, including visceral fat around the organs, which is closely linked with heart disease and type 2 diabetes. A tape measure picks this up even when BMI looks fine.
